Construction of the fort was started in 1672; that’s more than 100 years before America became a country!


St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the US! The fort, Castillo de San Marcos, is a large part of the city’s rich history. The fort walls vary in thickness from 14 to 19 feet wide; an elephant could like down inside the walls and still have room to stretch out!
